Eveline State Rec Site

Eveline State Rec Site
Homer

Homer · Kenai Peninsula

While many visitors to Homer exclusively walk the sandy shores of the Spit, heading slightly out of town on East End Road yields some of the most spectacular, accessible hiking in the region at the Eveline State Recreation Site.

Donated to the state by Edmund Schuster in honor of his late wife, Eveline, this 80-acre park is managed by the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club. It offers a gentle, well-maintained trail system perfect for year-round outdoor recreation without requiring technical mountaineering skills.

Wildflowers and Glaciers

The true magic of the Eveline Rec Site happens during the spring and summer months. The alpine meadows explode into a breathtaking profusion of vibrant wildflowers, including bright pink fireweed, blue lupines, wild geraniums, false hellebore, monk's hood, and the unique chocolate lily. The trailhead kiosk even provides informative binders on the local flowers to help you identify the stunning flora as you walk.

The outer perimeter trail is approximately a two-mile loop. As you hike, the gentle terrain frequently opens up into dedicated viewing platforms providing jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Dixon and Portlock Glaciers, Kachemak Bay, the Homer Spit, and the jagged peaks of the Kenai Mountains.

Year-Round Access

The park isn't just a summer destination. When the snow flies, the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club meticulously maintains the area for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Featuring picnic tables, dog stations (dogs are permitted on leash), and interpretive panels, it's an incredible, quiet place to enjoy a sunny afternoon away from the crowds of downtown Homer.
