Alpine Creek
Lodge
If you are traveling the Denali Highway and want a place that embodies the "True Alaska" experience, you need to pull in at Alpine Creek Lodge. Situated almost exactly halfway between Paxson and Cantwell, it's a remote, year-round sanctuary in the heart of the Alaska Range.

Alpine Creek isn't a cookie-cutter tourist hotel. It's a rustic, off-grid lodge run by folks who live and breathe the lifestyle. They offer private rooms, suites, and cabins, but the heart of the place is the main lodge. They serve hearty, family-style meals that are exactly what you need after a long day in the field. Last time I was there, it was a deliciously tender brisket. The Grizzly Bar is a great spot to grab a drink, sit on the porch, and look out over the Susitna River Valley.
Whether you're into trophy Arctic Grayling fishing, gold panning, or exploring the Clearwater Mountains, this is your basecamp. In the winter, it's a premier destination for snowmachiners and a key training stop for Iditarod mushers.

I've been coming here for a long time. I first met the owner, Claude, many years ago while I was out caribou hunting. Since then, it's become one of my favorite spots to drop anchor.
Whenever I'm out moose hunting in the area, I make it a point to stay at Alpine Creek for a few nights. There is something about the atmosphere there — sitting in the common room sharing hunting stories with other locals and travelers — that you just can't find anywhere else. Claude and his family are authentic Alaskans, and they've built a place that respects the land and the people who use it.
